Diesel in Petrol vs Petrol in Diesel: Which Mistake Costs More?

Putting the wrong fuel in your car happens to thousands of Kiwis each year. One mistake is far more expensive than the other — here's what you need to know.

Every week, EEK Mechanical helps dozens of New Zealanders who've grabbed the wrong nozzle at Z Energy, BP, or their local fuel station. While any misfuel situation feels awful in the moment, the two scenarios have very different outcomes for your wallet and your vehicle.

Diesel in a petrol car is the less serious mistake. Petrol engines can't ignite diesel fuel properly because diesel requires higher compression to combust. If you realise immediately and don't start the engine, you're looking at a simple fuel drain and flush. Even if you've driven a short distance, most petrol engines will just run poorly, cough, and eventually stall without suffering permanent damage. The fuel system needs cleaning, but major engine components typically survive unscathed.

Petrol in a diesel car is where things get expensive fast. Diesel fuel acts as a lubricant for your diesel engine's fuel injection system. Petrol doesn't have these lubricating properties — in fact, it acts more like a solvent. When petrol runs through a diesel fuel system, it can cause catastrophic damage to the high-pressure fuel pump, injectors, and other precision components. We're talking potential repair bills of $8,000 to $15,000 or more.

The key difference comes down to engineering. Diesel engines operate with much tighter tolerances and higher pressures. They're built expecting fuel that lubricates as well as burns. Petrol engines are more forgiving of fuel quality variations.

What to do right now:

First rule: DO NOT START THE ENGINE. Don't even turn the key to accessories mode if you can help it. This single decision could save you thousands of dollars. If you've already started the engine, turn it off immediately and don't restart it.

Second, don't panic. This happens to smart, experienced drivers all the time. You're not the first, and you won't be the last.

Third, get professional help quickly. The longer contaminated fuel sits in your system, the more problems it can cause.
