What Happens When You Put Petrol in a Diesel?
Diesel engines rely on compression ignition - the fuel ignites from the heat of compression, not a spark plug. Petrol has a much lower flash point and different lubrication properties.
The Damage Petrol Causes:
- ✕Fuel Pump Damage - Diesel fuel lubricates the pump; petrol strips this lubrication causing metal-on-metal wear
- ✕Injector Damage - High-pressure diesel injectors can seize or score when running on petrol
- ✕Fuel Line Damage - Petrol can degrade rubber seals and hoses designed for diesel
- ✕Engine Damage - If driven, pre-detonation (knocking) can damage pistons and cylinder walls
If you haven't started the engine, the damage is usually limited to the tank. Call us immediately!
