The Register Is Now Live

From 1 April 2026, the NZIFDA National Misfuel Register is operational and mandatory for all misfuel disposal events in New Zealand. Every drain and disposal of contaminated fuel — petrol in diesel, diesel in petrol, or any fuel contamination event — must be recorded on the register by a certified Tier 1 Compliant Operator. NZIFDA maintains the register and sets the compliance standards.

Why the Register Was Established

New Zealand's misfuel recovery sector has historically operated with minimal formal oversight. The register addresses this by creating an auditable national record of disposal events, ensuring that hazardous waste generated by misfuelling is tracked from removal through to licensed disposal. It also provides consumers with verifiable documentation of compliant practice — increasingly required by insurers for claims involving contaminated fuel.

What Drivers Need to Know

If your misfuel recovery is coordinated by EEK Mechanical, your disposal event is automatically registered on your behalf. You will receive a register reference with your job documentation. Keep this reference — it is your evidence that your disposal was handled legally and completely. If a recovery provider cannot give you a register reference, their disposal was not compliant.
