Water in Oil in a Rental Car — What to Do in New Zealand
Discovered milky oil or oil contamination in a rental vehicle in New Zealand? Here is exactly what you need to do to protect yourself.
Rental Car Oil Contamination — Your Liability
If you drove a rental vehicle through deep water and it subsequently shows water in the oil, you may be liable for the damage under the rental agreement. Most New Zealand rental agreements exclude cover for water damage caused by driving through flooded areas. The critical question is whether you operated the vehicle in a manner that caused the damage.
If the Contamination Pre-Existed Your Rental
Document the oil condition before returning the vehicle. Pull the dipstick and photograph the oil. Check the oil filler cap and photograph any milky residue. If contamination is present and you have not driven through water, this is the rental company's responsibility — but only if you can prove it.
If You Drove Through Flood Water
Stop the vehicle immediately. Do not restart. Call the rental company first, then call EEK Mechanical. We provide a written report documenting the pre-start condition, contamination severity, and recommended action — this protects you from claims that you operated the vehicle after the event, and forms the basis for any insurance or rental liability dispute.
Travel Insurance
If you are a tourist in New Zealand, your travel insurance may cover rental excess claims arising from vehicle damage. Check your policy and contact your insurer. Our documentation is accepted by all major international travel insurers.
