Toyota HiLux Water in Oil — Common Causes for NZ Owners
The Toyota HiLux is New Zealand's most capable 4WD ute. Here is what HiLux owners need to know about water in oil and oil contamination.
HiLux and the New Zealand Environment
The Toyota HiLux has been New Zealand's bestselling 4WD ute for many years. Used on farms, in construction, by recreational off-roaders, and as daily drivers, the HiLux operates in a wider range of conditions than almost any other vehicle in the fleet. That range of use creates diverse oil contamination risk scenarios.
1KD-FTV and 2GD-FTV Diesel — Oil Cooler
The 1KD-FTV (3.0-litre) and 2GD-FTV (2.8-litre) diesel engines both use oil coolers integrated into the engine block. On high-mileage 1KD engines, oil cooler seal failure is a known cause of coolant contamination. The 2GD (from 2015) is a newer design with a better oil cooler, but it is not immune — particularly on vehicles working in high thermal environments.
River Crossings
The HiLux's impressive ground clearance and 4WD capability make it popular for river crossings in New Zealand's high country. Without a snorkel, the standard air intake height is approximately 700mm — adequate for most crossings. However, deeper crossings or sudden drop-offs in the riverbed can result in water ingestion. A snorkel is strongly recommended for HiLux owners who cross rivers regularly.
