Misfuelling After Hours: What to Do When Petrol Stations Are Unstaffed

Most misfuels happen at unstaffed or after-hours forecourts where there is no immediate help. Here is what to do if you misfuel outside business hours in New Zealand.

The After-Hours Problem

New Zealand has thousands of self-service, unstaffed petrol stations — pay-at-pump forecourts that operate 24 hours with no staff on site. When a misfuel occurs at one of these stations, there is no staff member to call for immediate help, no one to secure the pump bay, and no one with authority to manage the scene. Drivers are on their own until professional help arrives.

What to Do Immediately

Do not start the engine. Note the pump number and approximate fuel quantity added. If the forecourt has an emergency stop button (usually a red button near the pump console), activate it to cut pump power to the affected bay. This is a safety measure, not a cure — but it prevents anyone else from accidentally fuelling into a vehicle that should not be moved.

Calling for Help

EEK Mechanical operates 24/7 — including weekends, public holidays, and overnight. Call 0800 769 000 from wherever you are. In rural areas where mobile coverage is limited, move to a location with signal while someone remains with the vehicle if possible. We can dispatch to most New Zealand locations within two hours, including regional and rural areas.

Documenting the Incident

At an unstaffed station, you are the only witness. Photograph the pump display, the nozzle, your fuel gauge, and the surrounding area. Retain your payment receipt. This documentation is essential for any subsequent insurance claim or dispute about liability.
