Insurance and Misfuelling in New Zealand: Does Your Policy Cover You?

Many New Zealand drivers assume their car insurance covers a misfuel. Often it does not. We explain what to look for in your policy and how to maximise your recovery options.

The Insurance Gap

Standard comprehensive car insurance in New Zealand typically covers accidental damage from collision, weather, fire, and theft. Misfuelling — placing the wrong fuel in a vehicle — is generally classified as driver error, and many policies exclude it explicitly. Before assuming you are covered, locate your policy document and search specifically for "contaminated fuel," "misfuel," or "wrong fuel."

Policies That Do Cover Misfuelling

Some premium comprehensive policies from providers including AA Insurance and Tower Insurance include misfuel coverage as a standard or optional add-on. Certain credit card travel insurance products — particularly those from American Express and premium Visa/Mastercard products — cover misfuelling in rental vehicles. Roadside assistance plans (AA, FMG) may cover the call-out but not the full recovery and repair cost.

How to Maximise Your Position

If your policy is unclear, call your insurer before you need to make a claim. Ask specifically: "If I put petrol in my diesel car, is the recovery and repair covered?" Get the answer in writing if possible. If you are underinsured for misfuelling, consider whether your current policy offers an upgrade. The premium increase is typically modest — and a single misfuel incident will cost far more than years of the premium difference.
