Fuel Contamination vs Misfuel: What Is the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

Fuel contamination and misfuelling are different problems with different causes and different solutions. Understanding the distinction helps you get the right help quickly.

What Is Fuel Contamination?

Fuel contamination refers to the presence of any substance in a fuel tank that should not be there — water, sediment, microbial growth (diesel bug), or degraded fuel. Contamination can occur at the storage level (petrol station underground tanks that have developed leaks or condensation issues) or at the vehicle level (water ingress through a poorly sealed filler cap, or long-term fuel storage in a rarely driven vehicle).

What Is Misfuelling?

Misfuelling is specifically the act of filling a vehicle with the wrong type of fuel — petrol in a diesel vehicle, or diesel in a petrol vehicle. The contaminating substance is a correctly formulated but incompatible fuel product, not a foreign substance.

Why the Distinction Matters

Contamination and misfuelling require different technical responses. Fuel contamination may require tank cleaning, biocide treatment, or fuel polishing — but may not require a full system flush if caught early. Misfuelling almost always requires a complete drain, flush, and filter replacement. Insurance treatment also differs: contamination from a petrol station's defective tank is the retailer's liability; misfuelling is almost always the driver's responsibility.
