What Is Two-Stroke Mix?
Two-stroke premix is petrol blended with two-stroke oil at ratios like 25:1 or 50:1. It's used in chainsaws, lawn mowers, outboard motors, and other small engines that don't have a separate oil sump.
Accidents happen — a fuel can labelled for the mower ends up in the car, or someone grabs the wrong container at the shed. The oil in the mix doesn't burn cleanly in a modern four-stroke car engine and causes a cascade of problems.
What Happens When Two-Stroke Mix Goes in Your Car?
The oil in two-stroke premix doesn't combust fully in a modern engine. It leaves residue on spark plugs, coats oxygen sensors, and — most critically — can destroy the catalytic converter by clogging it with unburned oil deposits.
Signs & Symptoms:
- ⚠Heavy Blue/White Smoke — Oil burns in the combustion chamber and exits as thick exhaust smoke
- ⚠Spark Plug Fouling — Oil residue coats plugs, causing misfires
- ⚠Catalytic Converter Damage — Unburned oil clogs and overheats the converter
- ⚠Rough Idle & Misfires — Engine runs unevenly due to fouled ignition
- ⚠Check Engine Light — O2 sensor and catalyst efficiency codes
A small amount mixed with a full tank may only cause smoke. A large amount can cause expensive catalytic converter failure.
Our Process
All oil-contaminated fuel removed
Lines flushed of oily residue
Clean fuel added to get you running again
Fast response across New Zealand
Professional, insured technicians
We inspect plugs for fouling and advise on next steps
What To Do Right Now
- 1Stop driving
The more you drive, the more oil deposits build up in the exhaust system
- 2Turn off the engine
Reduce further fouling of spark plugs and catalytic converter
- 3Estimate the mix ratio
How much two-stroke fuel went in vs. how much was already in the tank?
- 4Call Eek: 0800 769 000
We'll drain the tank and assess any damage
Don't Wait — Protect Your Catalytic Converter
A catalytic converter replacement costs thousands. A fuel drain costs a fraction of that.
